England's got talent

Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne talks home-grown Premier League talent – and how our recent Academy investment is already getting results.

From what I’ve seen this season there is some terrific home-grown talent coming through to play on the Premier League stage. Given the investment that’s gone into the academy system over the last few years, I’m not surprised.

Southampton is a great example of that: matching our world-class Academy facility with a great end product. This season James Ward-Prowse’s terrific set-piece delivery has seen him become a key member of our squad. We are also really proud that Southampton has had the most U21 debuts in the Premier League this season, with six guys stepping up.

Southampton Rising star Matt Targett

Then you’ve another local lad like Matt Targett making the grade. He’s had a great rise to prominence through all the England teams after being discovered in a Southampton school sport programme. You’ve got to be a special talent to make your Premier League debut at 19 and Matty is showing fantastic promise at left-back. He’s got great pace down the wing, good delivery and is solid defensively too.

Saido Berahino saluting the fans

The future for the Premier League and England is very bright. Danny Ings, John Stones, Eric Dier and Saido Berahino are also part of an England U21 set-up that’s full of Premier League talent.
